Austin Strip Clubs: The Midday Brief: Top Texas Headlines for Jan. 25, 2012

… A major goal of the University of Texas is to create an educational environment that reflects ‘the basic demographic reality’ of the state, as UT President William Powers Jr. puts it. Judged against that standard, the Austin flagship is making progress on some fronts, losing ground on another and holding its own on still others when it comes to the freshmen who enroll from Texas high schools. Overall, the university has a long way to go before the number of black and Hispanic students reflects the state’s diversity.” — UT reports mixed results on enrollment diversity, Austin American-Statesman
New in The Texas Tribune:
“Nearly five years into a legal battle over the constitutionality of Texas’ $5-per-patron strip club fee, the U.S. Supreme Court has refused to take up the adult entertainment industry’s case against the state.” — U.S. Supreme Court Won’t Hear “Pole Tax” Case

Austin Strip Clubs: An early look at Sundance

Saturday saw the U.S. premiere of Andrea Arnold’s “Wuthering Heights.” Anyone who has seen Arnold’s “Red Road” or “Fish Tank” will recognize her unique style in this invigorating take on the classic novel. By shooting the film in a square 4:3 aspect ratio rather than the usual widescreen approach, Arnold eschews the usual David Lean approach to literary adaptation, choosing to focus our attention on the beautifully expressive faces of her non-professional actors rather than the blustery vistas of the English landscape. This film joins Cary Fukunaga’s recent “Jane Eyre” as encouraging examples of what can be done with too often told tales.
Bruce Willis was in town for the premiere of “Lay the Favorite,” the new film from director Stephen Frears. The shining light of the film, as she so often is, was Rebecca Hall, the consistently impressive actress who here leaves behind her usual classiness to play a naive stripper from Florida. When she goes to Vegas with dreams of being a cocktail waitress, she runs into Wil …

Austin Adult Entertainment: Under attack…again

Filed under: Austin adult entertainment — highheels at 4:49 am on Monday, January 23, 2012

Most pregnancy resource centers continued their programs unimpeded, but those who spearheaded the attack went on to greater fame. Prime Time producer Ben Sherwood is now president of ABC News. Ron Wyden is now in the U.S. Senate. Fitzsimmons in 1993 was one of the top 50 “hired guns” on Capitol Hill, according to Washingtonian, and in 1995 he testified to Congress that partial-birth abortions occurred only when a mother’s life was in jeopardy or an unborn child had a medical condition that would prevent his survival. Two years later Fitzsimmons told the American Medical News, “I lied through my teeth.”
A new century brought the third attack on the centers. The most highly publicized part came in 2002 under the leadership of New York’s attorney general at that time, Eliot Spitzer: He later went on to the governorship, then left office in disgrace as his patronage of prostitutes received exposure. In 2002 Spitzer’s extracurricular activities were still secret but he openly praised NARAL, the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, saying it was “instrumental” in his election and “made a difference not only for me but for candidates through the state who care about choice.”

ROLINGWOOD
Prostitution charge reduced
The charges against a woman accused of running a prostitution ring in Rollingwood were reduced to misdemeanor prostitution on Jan. 12, according to Travis County court records.
Daifei Li, 45, was charged with aggravated promotion of prostitution, a third-degree felony, in August 2010 after she was arrested in a sting operation on the Rollingwood-based massage parlor she was running.
According to an arrest affidavit for Li, some reviews on an escort review website said that her massage parlor, Massages by DiDi, was providing sexual acts for money. The affidavit alleged that Li was controlling, supervising or managing multiple prostitutes.

Austin Adult Entertainment: Who’s the greatest Austin athlete of all time? All aboard for the "Night Train"

Lane’s father, an abusive pimp they called Texas Slim, told his bottom girl “either the baby goes or you go” in the summer of 1928. And so with tears Johnnie Mae King wrapped her 3-month-old baby in newspapers and put him in a dumpster on the 1900 block of East 9
A widow, Emma Lane, heard what she thought was a cat yowling in the trash bin and was shocked to see a baby boy. He becames hers and she raised him up, not afraid to use the belt,  with her two older boys.

One night Texas Slim beat King and went to bed and he never woke up. After shooting her pimp in the head, Lane’s mother spent a couple years in prison, then moved to Scottsbluff, Nebraska, where she married and opened a restaurant/ bar.

Austin Adult Entertainment: VHS Doc REWIND THIS! Needs Your Help! Trailer & Kickstarter Live!

Filed under: Austin adult entertainment — highheels at 10:49 pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2012

That enthusiasm for films in all of their forms and formats has inspired a group of filmmakers to dig into the historical significance of the VHS tape. We take home video for granted these days, but in the early ’80s this was a huge deal. There was no streaming, no one was mailing video tapes to your house, it was all up to you. We finally had the ability to see whatever we wanted whenever we wanted without relying on repertory film screenings or late night cable selections. The power was in the hands of the people.
Rewind This! A VHS Love Story is just that, a labor of love among three fans who have spent much of their own time and money putting together this document. Normally I’m not one for pimping Kickstarter campaigns, but co-director Josh Johnson bribed me with a tape of Penelope Spheeris’ Dudes at Fantastic Fest, so I’m in the bag for these guys. They just opened their …

MISSOULA — A man wanted in a Missoula County prostitution case sicced a pit bull on Texas police and leapt from a second-story window to avoid them.
It didn’t work.
Terrence Tyrell Edwards, 29, was being held in an Austin, Texas, jail on Thursday on a $250,000 warrant for an alleged probation violation in Missoula County.
Edwards received a suspended sentence last year after pleading guilty in Missoula County District Court to a charge of promoting prostitution.
On Wednesday, his 20-year-old brother Leroy Clifford Edwards appeared in Missoula County Justice Court on a charge of promoting prostitution in a case involving two sisters. Charging documents against him quoted women accusing both brothers of pimping them.

AUSTIN — The parents of a 34-year old Cedar Park woman found dead in an Austin dumpster  talked Friday to clear the air about their daughter’s life.
“She was a great person. She was well loved. She had lots of friends and she had a good home life,” said Bob Harvey about his daughter Stephanie Harvey.
On Thursday, Austin police homicide detectives arrested 30-year old James Grady for Harvey’s murder.
Grady told police he hired Harvey as a prostitute and claimed that she stole some of his property including jewelry.
“No matter what she did, to get the drugs or whatever she might have done, I don’t think justified what happened to her and the way the person handled her,” added Bob.

Austin Escorts: At forum, variety of cures offered for higher education ills

Filed under: Austin escorts — goodtimegirl at 2:25 am on Saturday, January 14, 2012

There was little talk about that controversy at Friday’s discussion, which focused more on the soaring costs of higher education. Nationwide, tuition has gone up four times faster than inflation and two times faster than health care spending in the past 25 years, said Thomas Lindsay, the policy foundation’s director for higher education. Students who graduate with debt this year are projected to have on average $29,000 in outstanding loans, which comes to about $40,000 with interest, he said.
Richard Vedder, a professor of economics at Ohio University and a senior fellow at the policy foundation, cited low graduation rates, administrative bloat and the production of more degree holders than the job market can absorb as factors in the cost spiral. He said faculty members bear some of the blame as well, for a failure to innovate.
“We do, more or less, teach the same way Socrates did 2,400 years ago,” Vedder said. “Teaching’s the only profession, with the possible exception of prostitution, where there’s been no productivity advance in 2,400 years.”
