How pathetic! The U.S. Supreme Court, by a bare “majority of the GOP appointees” has approved the corporate prostitution of electoral offices in the good ole USA on the simplistic rationale that corporate entities, being legal persons, are equivalent on equal protection grounding to human beings whose electoral freedom is one person one vote.
Corporations either for profit or tax exempt non-profits can now disproportionately buy and invest on media time for their maximum benefits, it’s not just their profits but as a matter of business they can! Soon they will be selling our mothers, too, for their investment profits! No wonder Gov. Deval Patrick is now more subdued from his political chant and war cry “Yes we can!” No you can’t. Corporate America is going to own our state and federal governments, in as much as the health insurance corporations own the US Senate’s 41st vote filibuster government. It’s no longer a majority of even one rule …

Bad boys behave badly on road trips and bachelor-party weekends, this we know. What constitutes incredibly bad behavior also is widely known, copied, envied and despised. The early hype surrounding I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell – apart from the disgusting marketing campaign – was that the adaptation of Tucker Max’s novels and Internet scribbling would be the be-all, end-all of sophomoric frat-boy humor. It isn’t, unless one considers diarrhea to be riotously funny.
Apart from some truly coarse misogynistic dialogue, Beer in Hell isn’t even as shocking as The Hangover, which at least 50 percent of unofficial Hollywood hopes will be nominated for an Oscar as Best Picture.  (I’m still trying to figure out how the chicken got past the spy-cams at Caesars Palace.)  Matt Czuchry, Geoff Stults, Jesse Bradford play the naughty lads, who, when they’re not insulting strippers, are practicing the arts of projectile vomiting and public urination. Despite all this wonderful stuff, Beer in Hell tanked at the box office. That’s really all one needs to know about it. The bonus features don’t bring much to the party, either. – Gary Dretzka

Chicago’s Austin neighborhood is notorious for its violence. Gang wars, drugs, murder, and prostitution are common occurrences.
Stray dogs, many of them castoffs from dogfighting, roam the streets and alleys, weaving between the abandoned houses with plywood-covered windows.
Stopped in the nick of time
Twelve-year-old Terrence Murphy and his pit bull Elmo are refreshing exceptions in this grim neighborhood.
Terrence was on his way to becoming another dogfighting statistic when End Dogfighting in Chicago Anti-Dogfighting Advocate Sean Moore spotted him in an alley, about to engage in a dogfight. Moore, a reformed dogfighter from Austin, convinced Terrence to join the program’s Pit Bull Training Team (PBTT).

Many civil liberties groups in the US are up in arms over Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United V Federal Election Commission, that gives corporations free reign to spend as much money as they can afford (which is a lot) to influence American political election outcomes. This is the same gaggle of Supreme Court Justices (more or less) that gave us, literally, the glorious reign of George Dubya Bush. MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann dedicated one of his ’special messages’ to the ruling which he said made all US politicians ‘prostitutes‘ to big corporations.
Eh….so what’s new? Here’s the relevant part of the ruling:
The relevant factors in deciding whether to adhere to [precedents] beyond workability – the precedent’s antiquity, the reliance interests at stake, and whether the decision was well reasoned – counsel in favor of abandoning Austin, which itself contravened the precedents of Buckley and Bellotti. San Francisco’s 311 Platform is a program that has already shown the benefits of open source. The program allows citizens to text or Tweet the city about issues such as crime or traffic. Because the city released the code for the program, any citizen has the opportunity to improve upon it. With Austin still adjusting to its new position as a major city, this type of public collaboration could make the transition infinitely easier and enhance the quality of life for its citizens. 
Local government will never have the sex appeal of a party that relishes in denying health care to millions or a New York governor with a propensity for prostitutes. But it needs public involvement much more than state or national governments. Open-source software allows the public to innovate its city, and Austin should adopt it.

Public safety issues simmered throughout Jan. 14’s Austin City Council meeting, with items affecting police and firefighter staffing. Council approved creating a 20th commander position for Lt. Wayne Demoss, who was previously passed over for promotion by Police Chief Art Acevedo following allegations he had visited a Panamanian brothel while on vacation. Acevedo appointed another candidate to the position before a hearing examiner ruled Acevedo had improperly withheld the promotion, necessitating the additional commander position. Additionally, council directed the city manager to apply for a federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant. Four-person staffing on fire trucks is an industry safety standard, albeit one the fire department has struggled to meet in lean budget years. The SAFER grant application, due Jan. 15, was made “with the goal of securing the requisite funds to achieve full four person staffing once grant monies are accepted,” according to the council resolution. The grant must now be federally approved and then accepted by the city; if the city does accept funds, they come with stipulations, including forgoing any layoffs. Ultimately, the grant is expected to result in 25 additional hires. – W.D.
