Hoyer Hammers Limbaugh Over ‘Slut’ Attack

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) lashed out at Rush Limbaugh Tuesday over the radio host’s recent attacks on a female law student.  Limbaugh last week called Georgetown Law Center student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” for testifying in support of President Obama’s new birth-control mandate.
Hoyer said the attack was “vicious,” “reckless,” “inaccurate” — and perfectly consistent with Limbaugh’s modus operandi.  “Rush Limbaugh’s attack on Sandra Fluke was beyond the pale, indefensible, vicious, intimidating to others who might want to … testify before the Congress of the United States, and a … continued demeaning of the public debate,” Hoyer said, unbidden, during a press briefing at the Capitol.
“Mr. Limbaugh was not out of character when he said these things,” Hoyer added. “He treats his political opponents with great disdain [and] disrespect. … This just happened to be a particularly egregious manifestation of that practice.”  Hoyer noted that he has three daughters, “and if he had treated one of my daughters that way I would be even more outraged than I am for Sandra Fluke.”

The View co-host Sherri Shepherd defended Patricia Heaton Tuesday, after the sitcom actress took major flak for backing Rush Limbaugh’s recent attacks on birth control advocate Sandra Fluke.
Shepherd says Heaton is a personal friend:
“Patricia Heaton…is a good friend of mine, and Patricia Heaton is not a malicious person…I think Patricia Heaton was being sarcastic with the situation. However, I’m glad, because the Patricia Heaton I know quickly came back and apologized when it looked like she was being malicious towards Ms. Fluke.”
Rush Limbaugh has lost thirteen sponsors since he referred to Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke as a “slut” and a “prostitute” after Fluke testified before Congress last week about why birth control should be covered under her school insurance policy.
Heaton, best known for her role as Ray Romano’s wife on Everybody Loves Raymond, posted (and later erased) this series of tweets attacking Sandra Fluke:

Did he do it for the money? Not wanting to slide into the gutter where Rush Limbaugh crouches quite comfortably, I will not accuse him of prostitution in apologizing to Sandra Fluke in order to, allegedly, keep his advertisers. But the pungent odor coming up from the grate does not smell like sincerity. His snarky web “apology” has more hubris than humility.
If there is a slut in L’affaire Limbaugh, it’s not Sandra Fluke. Limbaugh has made his career pandering to some of the darkest corners of the American political psyche. He routinely uses the most vitriolic rhetoric as an insidious weapon in the extremist war on reason and simple justice. It’s not funny, and it’s no joke, despite his lame claim that he is simply trying to be humorous. How absurd!

Limbaugh slams Fluke on his show, claiming that she is asking the government to subsidize her sex life. “What does that make her?” he asks. “It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She’s having so much sex she can’t afford contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex.”

So much of the outrage against Rush Limbaugh has focused on his having called Georgetown law student, Sandra Fluke, a “slut” and a “prostitute,” that I think it’s easy to lose sight of what’s even worse than what he called her.
First, let’s remember that Sandra Fluke was testifying about the difficulty that all students at Georgetown have getting insurance coverage for birth control pills. It may have been easy for Rush to call the (presumably single, straight and childless – after all, she did not testify about herself) Fluke a slut. But that let the anti-woman crowd pretend that this issue is somehow about morality or premarital sex. But, of course, the anti-birth control forces don’t discriminate between married and single women, or between women with twenty children or women with none. It has nothing to do with morality. Mitt Romney had it right with his first, gut reaction to a question about the Blunt amendment: it is not government’s role to involve itself in the personal decisions made between men and women. (Unfortunately, of course, he immediately caved on that issue.)

He has subsequently faced criticism and lost a string of advertisers, including AOL.

Rush Limbaugh offered on Saturday and again today a half-hearted “apology” to try to stave off further defections by advertisers (hat tip to Political Carnival) over the contraception furor:
I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability?…My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.
Yet in protesting the vulgar and offensive language used to tar Flake as a “slut” and “prostitute,” liberals haven’t been effectively headlining the false premises and fabricated “news” stories behind his rant  — and most mainstream media outlets have ignored that side of the story. Now that Andrew Breitbart has passed away, other right-wingers, including Rush, are stepping up to carry out his legacy of creating false news stories and promoting phony narratives.
