Austin Strip Clubs: Charlie’s Austin closing to make way for new building

Filed under: Austin strip clubs — angel at 4:48 am on Thursday, September 15, 2011

The bar – which is at 1301 Lavaca St., in the shadow of the Texas Capitol – was founded as Uncle Charlie’s in 1984.
On Facebook, the bar’s owners said they were approached about six months ago by a group of investors regarding a purchase of the property. Following negotiations, the investors “met the price we’d asked for,” the owners said.
The owners bought the property more than a decade ago. It has an appraised value of nearly $1.2 million.
The owners of Charlie’s also own ’Bout Time, another gay and lesbian bar in Austin. They said ’Bout Time, which is at 9601 N. I-35, will remain open.
State records list officials of the Charlie’s ownership group as David Green, Tino Calderon and Ray McDermett.
Charlie’s is perhaps best known for its entertainers: drag queens and male strippers.

U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., arrives for a news conference in New York, Monday, June 6, 2011. After days of denials, a choked-up New York Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner confessed Monday that he tweeted a bulging-underpants photo of himself to a young woman and admitted to “inappropriate” exchanges with six women before and after getting married. When it comes to stirring the rumor mill, Robert Morrow is more likely to wield a paddle than a tablespoon.
Last month, the Austin conspiracy theorist and noted Ron Paul partisan took out an incendiary ad in the Austin Chronicle directed toward local strippers, escorts and “young hotties” – all of whom are avid news consumers, of course. “Have you ever had sex with Rick Perry?” the ad yelled in all capital letters.

Austin Strip Clubs: Texas ’stripper tax’ is constitutional, high court rules

Texas ‘stripper tax’ is constitutional, high court rules
8/29/2011 6:30 PM By Steve Korris
AUSTIN – The $5 cover charge at Texas nude bars is constitutional, the state Supreme Court ruled on Aug. 26.
The Justices reversed appellate judges in Austin who found the fee violated free speech rights under the U. S. Constitution.
Justice Nathan Hecht found the mixture of nudity and alcohol too dangerous to protect.
“The fee is not a tax on unpopular speech but a restriction on combining nude dancing, which unquestionably has secondary effects, with the aggravating influence of alcohol consumption,” he wrote.

Legislators imposed what became known as the “stripper tax” or the “pole tax” in 2007, to provide $25 million a year for a sexual assault program and devoting any surplus to health benefits for low-income residents.

Austin Strip Clubs: Who’s Behind ‘Perry a la Clinton’ Myth?

Mr. Morrow has an odd fascination with hatching quirky sex stories about Republican politicians even though he claims to be a card-carrying member of the GOP. A year earlier, he emailed copies of forged documents to the Dallas Blog claiming that former George H.W. Bush Sr. was running a pedophile ring out of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Mr. Morrow, in his e-mail to the Dallas Blog, admits to being a self-confessed “patron of Austin’s strip clubs,” but does not divulge whether it’s to meet male or female strippers; and allegedly obtained his information about Gov. Perry from fellow patrons and strippers.
Perhaps, Mr. Morrow is working on behalf of strip clubs that were attempting to abolish a stripper tax that was endorsed by Perry. Mr. Morrow as a source for information about

Austin Strip Clubs: Texas Supreme Court upholds $5 strip club fee

Texas Supreme Court upholds $5 strip club fee
(AP) – 2 hours ago
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Supreme Court has upheld a $5 entry fee for customers to strip clubs that serve alcohol.
Lower courts had ruled the fee an unconstitutional regulation of free speech. The Supreme Court brushed that aside with a unanimous opinion Friday, saying the fee is constitutional.
The court says the $5 fee is too small to create a burden on the expression of nude dancing.
State lawmakers created the so-called “pole tax” in 2007 to raise money for sexual assault prevention programs and health care for the uninsured. A coalition of strip clubs then sued to block the law.

Austin Strip Clubs: Texas Supreme Court upholds $5 strip club fee

Texas Supreme Court upholds $5 strip club fee JIM VERTUNO, Associated Press Updated 04:03 p.m., Friday, August 26, 2011
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A $5 entrance fee to Texas strip clubs is constitutional and not an improper restriction on nude dancing, the Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday. Lower courts had called the so-called “pole tax” an improper burden on the free expression of nude dancing and a violation of the First Amendment.

To avoid paying the fee, strip clubs could simply not serve alcohol, Justice Nathan Hecht wrote for the court.

Stewart Whitehead, attorney for the Texas Entertainment Association, said the strip club group may appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court on the free speech issue, or go back to the trial court to challenge the fee as an improper occupations tax under the Texas Constitution.
Texas requires 25 percent of an occupations tax to go to public education, which does not happen with the strip club fee, Whitehead said..

Austin Strip Clubs: Ron Paul Comments on Supporter’s ‘Silly’ Sex Ad Attack on Rick Perry

Filed under: Austin strip clubs — angel at 7:48 pm on Monday, August 22, 2011

Paul, a contender in the 2012 presidential race, appeared on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” on Aug. 19 and was asked by host Martha MacCallum to comment on Robert Morrow, an Austin resident who placed an ad seeking information on Perry’s relationships with women.
Morrow, a supporter of Paul’s, claims Perry is a “family values hypocrite and fraud.” He has accused Republican governor of having extra-marital affairs, although there is no evidence supporting his claims.
Morrow, a self-employed investor supported by a family inheritance, placed a full-page ad in the Austin Chronicle last week seeking to contact anyone who “ever had sex with Rick Perry.”
The full ad placed in the Austin Chronicle reads:
Have you ever had sex with Rick Perry? Are you a stripper, an escort, or just a ‘young hottie’ impressed by an arrogant, entitled governor of Texas? Contact CASH and we will help you publicize your direct dealings with a Christian-buzzwords-spouting, ‘family values’ hypocrite and fraud.

Austin Strip Clubs: VIDEO: Ron Paul calls supporter’s ad seeking Perry sex partners ’silly’

Filed under: Austin strip clubs — angel at 4:12 am on Sunday, August 21, 2011

An Austin supporter of Ron Paul wants to know if there are any women who have engaged in promiscuous activity with Rick Perry. Paul refused comment on the print ad Friday, saying it would provide something “rather silly” with “too much credibility.”
Robert Morrow, the Paul supporter responsible for the ad, spoke briefly with reporter Justin Elliott of Salon, indicating that the organization noted on the ad — Committee Against Sexual Hypocrisy (CASH) — was really just himself.
In part, the ad reads: “HAVE YOU EVER HAD SEX WITH RICK PERRY? Are you a stripper, an escort, or just a ‘young hottie’ impressed by an arrogant, entitled governor of Texas? Contact CASH, and we will help you publicize your direct dealings with a Christian-buzzwords-spouting, ‘family values’ hypocrite and fraud. … Offer not valid for enabling wives wearing Hillary Clinton boots. Note to gay people: If you know the truth about Rick, please QUIT covering for him.”

Austin Strip Clubs: Ad in Austin Alt Weekly Asks if You’ve Had Sex With Texas Governor Rick Perry

Filed under: Austin strip clubs — angel at 7:12 pm on Friday, August 19, 2011

I’m grateful to Salon’s Justin Elliott for calling attention to an ad placed in this week’s Austin Chronicle with the headline “HAVE YOU EVER HAD SEX WITH RICK PERRY?”
Elliott’s post begins:
An Austin Ron Paul supporter has taken out a full-page ad in the local alt weekly newspaper seeking any “stripper … escort … or ‘young hottie’” who has slept with Rick Perry, part of his single-minded jihad against the presidential candidate.
Please read Elliott’s entire post for the full story on why a guy named Robert Morrow created a one-man organization called CASH — the Committee Against Sexual Hypocrisy — to place the ad, which encourages anybody who has hooked up with the Republican presidential candidate to come forward about their “direct dealings with a Christian-buzzwords-spouting, ‘family values’ hypocrite and fraud.” (Tacked at the end of the ad: “Note to gay people: If you know the truth about Rick, please QUIT covering for him.”)
