The actual space at Polytheater is a crucial player in this. This is a lecture hall, not a theater. Over the decades it has seen historical performances by Vladimir Mayakovsky in the 1920s and Vladimir Vysotsky in the 1960s. This imparts an unusual atmosphere to the proceedings.
In her set design, Alisa Melikova both embraced and bucked the nature of the space. She accentuated its nontheatrical aura by blocking up the entire stage with a huge vertical construction. The actors walk up and down sets of stairs in what amounts to a sheer wall. On the other hand, Melikova overcame the severe limitations of the space through the use of film — residential interiors, landscapes and abstract designs are projected on sidewalls to give the impression that we are being transported to various locations.
The performance consists primarily of the court process led by the prosecutor with flashback scenes popping up here and there. Ageyev stylistically leans on the usual set of familiar contemporary “genres” — a TV talk show, a courtroom drama and, when the prosecutor turns into something of a stripper, a mildly titillating pop show.

It sounded too good to be true, which means, of course, that it was: R. Kelly, the man behind “I Believe I Can Fly,” “Bump ‘N Grind,” “I’m A Flirt” and more, singing at a North Austin strip club for “an intimate night with R. Kelly”? With tickets starting at a mere $30?
…
Finally, for his part, Kelly was telling the truth: at the event, a promoter explained to the hostile crowd that R. Kelly gets paid $250,000 if he’s actually going to perform — which also explains why a singer whose 2011 appearance in Houston had him play an 19,300-capacity arena was suddenly popping in to an under-utilized Austin strip club a year later. It’s hard to blame him for the fact that the promoter didn’t mention that he wouldn’t be singing in advance — though, while his reputation isn’t likely to get any worse, yelling that you weren’t paid enough at a bunch of fans who bought tickets expecting to hear you sing isn’t really a great look.

My stomach dropped a little when we showed up at a swanky strip club near the junction of 183 and 290 and right past the entrance was a sign proclaiming “NO REFUNDS.” My fellow concert goers and I joked that they were just going to play us some R. Kelly music videos, but once we saw the room we were too excited by the idea of seeing R. Kelly perform up close and personal to really believe this could all just be a rip off. R. Kelly’s legend is so great that Aziz Ansari does a bit where he simply describes going to an R. Kelly concert. And here we were, about to watch the man perform on a stage five feet from us. A stage with stripper poles on it.
