But the sex trade is no longer mostly girls hanging around dark city corners looking for business, experts said. It is a multibillion-dollar enterprise that has expanded to hundreds of thousands of women advertising — or being forced to advertise — their services on countless online classified ads, teen dating and social networking sites.
Craigslist shuttered its “adult services” section almost two years ago after complaints that ads for prostitution — many including children sold into the trade — were widespread on the site. But others, such as Backpage and Facebook, have taken its place, investigators said.
“The Internet is an enabler, a marketing strategy for the pimps who exploit these girls and the johns who use them,” said Noel Busch-Armendariz, a sociology professor at the University of Texas.
Detectives said it’s often tough to distinguish early in an investigation between victims willingly involved in prostitution and those who have been forced into the business.

The corner of 12th and Chicon streets on Austin’s east side is a notorious spot for drug deals. Now the city wants to start a program designed to change the area’s image by providing residents job and entrepreneurship training.
On East 11th Street, you’ll find a stretch of gentrified East Austin that reflects the city’s investment here over the last decade. But some recall the days before 11th street was so well groomed. Nelson Linder directs the Austin branch of the NAACP.
“You had high drug use. You had high prostitution use – absolutely. High violence – definitely,” Linder said. “11th Street was worse. Overall, it was worse than 12th Street.”

He said he previously dated the Austin woman’s mother several years ago, the affidavit said. Nielsen later told an Austin detective he knew what he did was wrong, but did not know it was illegal.
In a second, unrelated case, 40-year-old Adam Joseph Limle of Cincinnati, Ohio, also has been charged with online impersonation. He is also not in custody, jail records show.
Limle’s affidavit said that in October, a woman who Limle had been on two dates with told Austin police that someone made several websites with her name as the domain name. Those websites advertised her as a prostitute, the affidavit said. When contacted by detectives, Limle admitted he created the fake domain names and had called police in order to report the woman as a prostitute.

I bust my hand open on the concrete floor, rolling around on top of a drunk guy who’d fallen while dancing. The sequined, crucifix-embroidered cowboy hat I bought in Las Cruces also serves me well.
Unfortunately, we have to jet right after the set. We have a show in Austin the following night, and need to eat up some more highway before sleeping. I say my goodbyes to nice bros The Royal Heist (one of whom, fortunately for us, had a dream catcher tattooed on his neck — pictures to come) and the local beauty. The hardest part of touring is what you have to leave behind…
We leave El Paso just before midnight. Adrenaline wearing off. But we hang in there, passing the time by counting the area’s uniquely-named strip clubs: Tequila Sunrise Men’s Club (next to Red Roof Inn); and Jaguar’s Gold Club, rumored to be a favorite of Tracy Morgan.

PICAYUNE — Olympia Snowe and Sandra Fluke don’t have much in common. One is a 65-year-old Republican senator from Maine, the other a 30-year-old feminist law student at Georgetown. But their stories reflect a similar theme: the growing dismay and disgust over the toxic political climate in Washington today.
They also have a common enemy: Rush Limbaugh, the loudmouthed bully who runs one of America’s most popular talk shows. Everyone knows that Limbaugh called Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” for arguing that health insurance plans should cover contraceptives. But Snowe is also a victim of Limbaugh’s influence on American politics.
He — and his many clones — have coarsened the political conversation by making insult and invective the common tongue of public discourse. And they enforce a doctrine of conservative purity by branding moderates like Snowe as RINOs (Republicans In Name Only), heretics who should be banished into exile.

Freedom of speech seems to be the hot topic these days. We have so often seen the United States shun its citizens for speaking in advocacy of their beliefs. Even as we make progress through the 21st century, fully grasping the meaning of acceptance is tough. For example, Rush Limbaugh, a radio host, called Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown law student, a “slut” and a “prostitute” on his Thursday night show. However, there is a fine line between freedom of speech and slander, which is what I believe Limbaugh crossed.
